- Abstract
In this study, δ-Al2O3 (Saffil) reinforced Al-12Si (wt-%) LM-13 aluminum composites formed by pressure infiltration method were used. The aim of this work was to study the optimization of the aging behavior of δ-Al2O3 reinforced LM-13 aluminum alloy. Different heat treatment parameters were studied to clarify the effect of the reinforcement on the matrix phase precipitation in these composites. In order to optimize mechanical properties of the composites and unreinforced alloy, the specimens were solution treated at 495, 515, 535 and 555 °C temperatures for 8, 12, 16 and 20 hours and quenched in water at 20 °C. Aging was carried out at four aging temperatures of 151, 161, 171 and 181°C for a varying time of up to 36 h in air. After each aging step the measurements of Vickers microhardness were performed. The aging behavior of δ-Al2O3(Saffil)/Al-12Si (wt-%) LM-13 composites was studied using microhardness tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Microstructural studies were also performed by an optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods. Moreover, in some selected samples the three point-bending tests were carried out to determine the strength of the unreinforced alloy and composites. This work have revealed that each of the composite has different aging treatment regime. If one desire to apply aging treatment to the ceramic phase reinforced age hardenable alloys should change the standard heat treatment parameters that given for the unreinforced alloy. The higher the ceramic phase at the age hardenable alloy the higher the solution temperature and time are required.
