- Abstract
Empowerment is perceived as the gain of power and the right to choose where to live and work, as well as to have access to resources that enable these choices. Because access to these rights and benefits is not always afforded to people using mental health services, the aim of this study is to examine the relationship between personal empowerment and independent housing and work status of people with psychiatric disabilities. 93 participants with mental illness attending a community mental health organization in Portugal answered the Empowerment Scale in its Portuguese version. Participants were also asked about working and housing status. A Mann-Whitney statistical test was used to assess if personal empowerment scores for people with mental illness living in independent housing or working in regular jobs were significantly higher. Statistically significant differences indicate that people with mental illness living in independent housing or working in regular jobs had higher levels of empowerment than people with mental illness in other housing arrangements and with other work status. These findings reinforce that mental health services should support the access to competitive work and independent living as a way to promote personal empowerment in people with mental illness.
