- Abstract
The document is a response to a comment on the Evaluation of a quality improvement intervention to reduce anastomotic leak following right colectomy (EAGLE) trial. The authors agree that anastomotic leaks are not solely caused by technical failures and explain that the EAGLE trial focused on patient assessment and team building in addition to surgical technique. The key interventions included using an online anastomotic leak risk calculator for patient selection and implementing a pre-anastomosis checklist in the operating theater. The study found that teams with higher engagement with the modules had higher rates of clinical implementation and lower rates of anastomotic leak. The authors invite interested individuals to join the EAGLE-2 cohort study, which aims to expand engagement with the online modules.
