- Title
Righteous Gentiles Among Nations: A Selected Annotated Bibliography.
- Authors
Wertsman, Vladimir F.
- Abstract
The article presents books on non-Jews who risked their lives or made other sacrifices to help tens of thousands of Jews to escape the Holocaust machine. Such non-Jews are recognized and honored as Righteous Gentiles Among the Nations by the Yad Vashem Authority in Israel on the basis of an ancient Talmudic principle, which reads, "Whoever saves one life, it is as if he saved the entire world." It is important to note that Righteous Gentiles, men and women, appeared in numerous countries. They were young and old, came from various social strata, royalty, nobility, diplomats, clergy, military men, workers, peasants, and others, belonged to many religious denominations and held diverse political convictions, but were united by a common denominator, the desire to act without hesitation and help Jews survive the Holocaust. According to statistics issued by Vashem in January 2003 about 20,000 Righteous Gentiles have been recorded in various countries. A large number of Righteous Gentiles and the enormous literature in various languages will hopefully generate sometime in the future an encyclopedia or a comprehensive dictionary of this group to match existing encyclopedias of the Holocaust. Some books are, The Righteous Among the Nations, Things We Couldn't Say, and Hidden in France: A Boy's Journey Under Nazi Occupation.
