- Title
Airbnb Drives Up Housing Costs for Everyone: Time to Regulate It.
- Authors
KOLHATKAR, SONALI
- Abstract
The article discusses the impact of Airbnb on housing costs and affordability. While Airbnb initially provided an opportunity for individuals to earn extra income by renting out their homes, the market has become dominated by wealthy elites and corporate entities. This has led to rising rents, unaffordable home prices, and increased homelessness in cities. The article also highlights the racial disparities in the housing market caused by Airbnb, with hosts being more likely to be white and the loss of housing and neighborhood disruption disproportionately affecting Black residents. To address these issues, some cities have implemented regulations on Airbnb, requiring hosts to obtain permission to rent out housing. While regulating Airbnb may not solve all economic injustices, it is seen as a step in the right direction towards addressing affordable housing concerns.
