- Title
The self-inflating resuscitator -- evolution of an idea.
- Authors
FAHEY, D. G.
- Abstract
The article discusses the history and evolution of the self-inflating bag, a device that has enabled rescuers to support life in practically any environment by simply squeezing a bag. Sixteenth century animal experiments conducted by Vesalius led the Royal Humane Society to recommend fireside bellows to resuscitate drowning victims. Danish anesthetist Henning Ruben introduced the Ambu Bag in 1957, which was an immediate success. Soon after, a similar product was created by Norway's Åsmund Laerdal with American anesthesiologists.
