- Authors
Howard, Elizabeth
- Abstract
The article demonstrates that Elizabeth Barrett Browning's poem "Mother and Poet" traveled from Britain to the U.S. and found a new form of social cohesion among audiences, turning it to new purposes related to grief and mourning during the Civil War. Topics discussed include elegy and conditions of intimacy in the dramatic lyric, the poem's periodical reprintings between 1861 and 1879, and poetry recitation in social gatherings and entertainments.
