Matthew Arnold and Giacomo Leopardi: Modernist Lyric Poetics and Stoic Pessimism in "Dover Beach".
- Authors
Sneyd, Rose
- Abstract
The article analyzes the poem "Dover Beach" by Victorian era British poet Matthew Arnold. It discusses the influence of Romantic-era poet Giacomo Leopardi's "canzone libera," or free-verse ode, poetry form. The author also argues that Arnold's stoic pessimism demonstrated in the poem is reflected of Leopardi's poem "La ginestra" ("Broom").
