- Title
Irish Melodies of Anacreontic Balladry.
- Authors
HANSEN, MICHAEL
- Abstract
This essay provides a criticism of Anacreontic odes, focusing particularly on the serial work "Irish Melodies," by Thomas Moore published between 1808 and 1834. It considers how More's Anglo-Irish ballads contained themes of nationalism, cosmopolitanism, and heroism. An overview of the history of the Anacreontic tradition, beginning around 1550, is presented. Ballads considered include “The Minstrel Boy,” “My Gentle Harp,” and “Oh! Blame Not the Bard.”
