- Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the influence of Roman Catholicism on the English poet laureate Alfred Tennyson in his life. Details are given noting the centrality of mystical religious experience in Tennyson's writings and personal life and connections are made between them and his friendship with Catholics in England. Further discussion is given noting the conflict between Tennyson's sympathy for Roman Catholicism, his concepts of the sacred, and his identity as an Englishman.
