- Abstract
This article discusses the social integration of Muslim communities within British society. The effect of modern society on the Islamic faith in Great Britain is framed in terms of the challenges that it poses to group identities and self-representation in society. The conceptual issues faced by Muslims practicing Islam in non-Muslim countries are considered in terms of the theological distinction between Dar al-Islam (the Abode of Islam) and Dar al-Harb (the Abode of Unbelief). The implications of this binary approach to religion for social integration and the legal status of Islamic practices is assessed. The social impact of the London, England bombings of July 7, 2008 is considered in terms of the radicalisation of Muslim youth.
