- Abstract
This article provides an introductory guide to the Jewish legal system with the intent of providing law librarians with the basic knowledge necessary to begin to help a patron conduct research in Jewish law. The second section of this article briefly describes the overall structure of the Jewish legal system. Jewish law begins with the immutable and unchangeable laws found in what is called the Written Law and its companion law, the Oral Law. Next the article discusses contemporary secondary sources of Jewish law and how they are especially useful to the nonexpert. The final section addresses how Jewish law is applied in 2006 in the U.S. and Israeli legal systems as well as in the major branches of Judaism.
