- Abstract
Hairs of mammals display various taxonomic differences. Studies revealed that the structure of hair medulla could be considered as a major criterion in classifying of congeneric and intrageneric primates, in this present study an attempt was made to establish an intergeneric relationship between two Indian Cercopithecus monkeys namely Presbytis entellus and Macaca mulatta on the basis of their hair medulla. Altogether 100 hair strands from each species were thoroughly studied. The figures of the hair medulla of those species revealed marked differences in their medullary form and shape. A significant difference could also be noticed in the incidence of medullation in terms of present or absent of hair medulla. Inspite of this difference in cytogenetic, genome size and mitochondrial DNA length support separate taxonomic position of the two species. The results of the present study could serve as an additional support to justify the different taxonomic position of those species.
