Rianimare il mito. Un simulacro di Fedra in Guido Gozzano.

- Abstract
In Guido Gozzano’s 1915 short story “Alcina”, the image of Phaedra’s perfect beauty depicted on a famous bas-relief in Agrigento comes to life thanks to the supposed enchantment of an English lady. Unlike in the slightly earlier Gradiva by Jensen (not by chance the object of Freud’s attention), in which the phenomenon remains ambiguously poised between reality and illusion, in the conclusion of Gozzano’s text the animation of the simulacrum is traced back to organic causes. In doing so, the author develops a subtly polemical long-distance dialogue with Gabriele d’Annunzio’s Fedra. In Gozzano’s work, the attempt to revive the myth leads to catastrophe, without it resulting in tragedy, as in his polemical idol.
