- Abstract
Children are generally invisible in the decision-making processes of urban life, considered only the citizens of the future and confined in private environments with vertiginously more motorized displacements under the argument of safety and well-being. There is a gap in the investigation of the child-city relationship in contexts outside large cities. Thus, the objective of this article was to analyze the characteristics of children's place attachment with the urban environment in Quixadá/CE in order to indicate (dis)potentialities for the development of a citizen formation in the city. The methodology was based on the production of affective maps to understand representations and place attachment to school routes. The results indicated that children who adopted active modalities had more environmental knowledge and were more critically place attachment to the routes, providing opportunities for the child to experience and develop place attachment with the public space and, consequently, citizen empowerment.
