- Title
Intergenerational Trauma and Resilience and the Possibilities for the Church.
- Authors
Miyoung Yoon Hammer
- Abstract
This article explores intergenerational trauma and resiliency in Asian American families and communities and the ways the Christian church can serve as a resource to individuals and families affected by trauma. The study of trauma is prevalent in academic and clinical research and has gained traction as a legitimate mental health consideration among the general public. However, there is more to be understood about the effects of trauma across generations and within cultural groups. Psychological and social idioms of distress vary by culture and are often shaped by circumstances. Thus, it is important to contextualize intergenerational trauma and to concomitantly understand resiliency within the sociocultural context. Historical narratives of Asian American migration and current experiences related to the health and social pandemics are referenced.
