- Abstract
The main aim of the investigation is to study the Coral reef associated fish fauna from Tuticorin centres, Gulf of Mannar, fishes were collected from three landing centres (Tharuvaikulam, Vellapatti and Therespuram). The fish samples were identified based on the external characteristics and their feeding habits. Statistical tool Primer (Ver. 6.1.11) such as Shannon indices, Simpson, dominance and evenness were employed to identify the species diversity. A total of twenty four species of fishes from 14 families were recorded. The fish population density varied from, 1002 species at Tharuvaikulam centre, 625 species at Therespuram and 312 species at Vellapatti. The indices of Shannon, Simpson, dominance and evenness also varied among the forms different centres. The highest species Shannon indices was recorded at Tharuvaikulam centre (3.011) and the lower species at Vellapatti centre (2.827). The results of present study provide useful information for fish biodiversity conservation as well as the management of coral reef habitat in India.
