- Abstract
Burhi Gandak river blessed with great ichthyofaunal diversity, diverse nature of fishing gears and methods which are evolved traditionally and being practiced extensively throughout the stretches of this river. Some traditional fishing gears like gillnet and lift net got modified by reducing mesh size due to reduction of fish stock size in the river. This modification involved extensively in overexploitation of resource which may affect sustainability of resource. The fishing methods involved by fishermen of river Burhi Gandak were found traditional. In this study an attempt has been taken to document the number and design of traditional fishing gears involved in fishing practice in river Burhi Gandak. After collection of data from all the sampling sites it has been found that all the traditional gears get operated with old design except gillnets and lift nets.
