- Abstract
Analysis of soil and water quality parameters of operational brackish water shrimp farms of SouthRaigad district were conducted as per the standard procedures of APHA. The soil parameters pH, Conductivity, Moisture, Water holding Capacity and Bulk density ranged from 7.4 to 8.5, 4.157 to 5.471 dS/m, 5.95 to 14.39 %, 44.10 to 67.43 % and 0.935 to 1.151 g/cm3, respectively. Whereas the range of water parameters namely salinity, temperature, pH, dissolve oxygen, ammonia, alkalinity, hardness and transparency were found to vary between 25.5 to 35.5 PSU, 24.2 to 29.8°C, 7.7 to 8.2, 5.1 to 6.7 mg/l, 0.0 to 0.5 ppm, 90 to 120 mg/l, 85.4 to 92.5 mg/l and 24.5 to 30.5 cm respectively. Moderate seepage rate of 5-7 cm/day was recorded in all shrimp farms. Thus, with the ideal range of soil and water parameters a great potential for brackish water shrimp farming exists in the South Raigad district of Maharashtra.
