- Abstract
Between February and June 2020, we surveyed 28 potential bat roosts (22 caves and 6 buildings - churches and chapels) in the Radensko polje Nature Park and its vicinity to record bat fauna, hoping to find hibernacula and maternity roosts. Individual bats, bat groups or bat droppings that indicated the presence of bats were recorded in 15 sites. At least seven species were found by visual observations and occasional detailed examination of individual bats: Rhinolophus hipposideros, R. ferrumequinum, Myotis myotis/blythii oxygnathus, M. emarginatus, Plecotus auritus, P. austriacus and one of the small Vespertilionidae species that could not be determined. The most important roosts are the hibernaculum of R. hipposideros in the cave Viršnica, the maternity roost of M. myotis/blythii oxygnathus in the church in the village Veliko Mlačevo and the maternity roost of R. hipposideros and M. emarginatus in the church in the village Velika Račna. Moreover six amphibian species were found in caves: Rana dalmatina, R. temporaria, Bufo bufo, Triturus carnifex, Lissotriton vulgaris, Ichthyosaura alpestris. The observed specimens were probably there incidentally following potential transportation in sinkholes with water flow or fall into entrance pits, though the possibility of intentional hibernation cannot be excluded.
