The article discusses a conversation between curator Valerie Cassel Oliver and professor Richard J. Powell is presented as Powell recollects about his time in Washington, DC, and at Howard University. He discusses his studies in art and his meeting with educators and artists such as Jeff Donaldson and James Phillip. He remembers the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC). He reminisces the African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists (AfriCOBRA) and its artists.
