- Abstract
The article discusses the issue of antitrust problems in the television broadcasting industry. As stated, certain characteristics of television broadcasting differentiate it from other mass communications media and create the need for a degree of government regulation and antitrust enforcement. As mentioned, the U.S. Congress enacted the Communications Act of 1934 to provide the needed supervision of the use of airwaves and guard against the possibility of their monopolization. Under this act, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission is authorized to allocate broadcast frequencies. As stated, the Communications Act provides sufficient authority for regulation of the television broadcasting industry in the public interest including national antitrust principles.
