PROBLEMS OF COMPENSATION AND RESTITUTION IN GERMANY AND AUSTRIA.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses the issue of war compensation and restitution in Germany and Austria. The first restitution law of general application in Germany was passed in the U.S. Zone on November 29, 1947. An interim legislation for providing payments to persecutees and their relatives whose economic conditions necessitated immediate financial support was promulgated in the form of Interim Award Laws enacted in the summer of 1946. There is no single law in Austria that covers all aspects of restitution or compensation as in Germany. As stated, laws of such nature are bound to be unpopular with everybody concerned. As mentioned, those who are wronged do not consider that the laws go far enough. As stated, extrinsic factors tend to increase the charge of injustice by third persons.
