- Title
My Spiritual Odyssey as an Accounting Professor.
- Authors

- Abstract
The time has come for accountants to embrace spirituality and creativity. Traditionally, accountants have tended to dissociate their spiritual beliefs from their work life; similarly, accountants view creativity with suspicion. This essay explains that spirituality can actually transform accounting ethics from a passive refrain from engaging in evil to active engagement in solving social problems. The essay draws lessons from a speech by Pope Francis to the World Federation of Accountants. The biblical figure of Joseph can provide an example for accountants to expand their limited view of the profession from unbiased reporter of objective facts to also interpreting those facts and providing inspired counsel. The essay concludes with a prediction that can be tested in a laboratory.
