- Abstract
A literary criticism of the novel "The House of the Seven Gables" by Nathaniel Hawthorne is presented. The novel focuses on a family from New England and their ancestral home. Several of the book's themes are examined which include retribution, guilt, and atonement. Also discussed are 19th century of domesticity, slavery, and boarding-house fiction.
