- Abstract
The article refers to a study by Andrew Chen and Han Kim concerning theories of Corporate Debt Policy and other research such as a paper by M. H. Miller, which supported the irrelevance proposition in regard to corporate and personal taxes, and suggests that international comparisons can be used to test conflicting theories. An example is the dividend tax credit in Canada, which reduces the impact of double taxation on dividends and the amount of debt financing needed--an idea that might be tried in the United States where interest and dividends appear to be equally taxed. Research by Litzenberger and Van Horne (1978) concerning a net tax advantage with debt financing is mentioned.
