- Abstract
The article discusses the collection of netsukes (pronounced netskays) a small, often exquisitely carved toggle from Japan. Netsukes were originally created to carry small items, as traditional Japanese clothing (kimonos) did not contain pockets. David Palmlund, a senior partner at LAI, collects the pieces, some of which can cost upwards of $400,000. The small pieces were carved with simple tools, often quite elaborately. It was common for highly skilled artisans to produce only two to four pieces a year. Palmlund is now looking to add a netsuke by the artist Gechu to his collection.
