TWO MODELS OF THE PRISON: ACCIDENTAL HUMANITY AND HYPERMASCULINITY IN THE L.A. COUNTY JAIL.
- Authors
DOLOVICH, SHARON
- Abstract
The article discusses the lessons that can reportedly be learned about humanizing the American prison system by examining the allegedly unorthodox correctional practices employed in the K6G unit of the Los Angeles County, California Men's Central Jail as of October 2012. It states that the K6G unit, which is mainly comprised of gay man and transgendered women, is free from gang-related politics and the threat of riots. According to the article, prison sexual assaults are also uncommon in the K6G unit. Other topics include prison overcrowding, as well as gang control and violence. A comparison of prison life in the K6G unit and in the jail's general population is also provided.
