- Title
Is Morocco Immune to Upheaval?
- Authors
Maddy-Weitzman, Bruce
- Abstract
The article examines the so-called Arab Spring uprisings in 2011 in relation to Morocco. According to the author, Morocco did not experience much in the way of protest or calls for changes in government in 2011. The author discusses the July 2011 national referendum in Morocco which contained constitutional reforms and argues that such steps helped solidify Morocco's standing among Western countries as a place where modernity has mixed favorable with tradition and pluralistic tolerance. The author states that this has been accomplished despite similar social and political circumstances that characterize other countries in the Middle East. He states that Moroccan king Mohammed VI and the Moroccan government have been proactive in response to calls for democratic reform.
