- Abstract
Alongside I R SB t sb i , the field of infectious disease dynamics has long considered instantaneous measures of growth, termed I r SB t sb i , a fundamental observed quantity from which I R SB t sb i is derived (Wallinga & Lipsitch, [5]). They find, however, that the data-smoothing assumptions necessary to estimate I r SB t sb i are similar to assumptions about the distribution of generation times necessary to estimate I R SB t sb i . The effective reproductive number, I R i , is an expression of how many infections are caused by each prevalent infection in the subsequent generation of transmission.
