- Abstract
Exchange policy is important for economic and financial stability, directly impacting the relationship between a country and the rest of the world, the way it operates in the exchange market, the rules for the international movement of capital and currency, in addition to the management of international reserves. In this study, the general objective is to analyse - from a historical point of view and through the analysis of official data - the exchange rate policy comparing different periods from 1994 to 2021, with emphasis on the main effects on the national economy after the economic-financial crisis. In particular, the economic performance is contrasted vis-à-vis the exchange rate oscillations over time, establishing possible (non-causal) relationships with the interventions carried out by the governments of turn. It was concluded that, in general, the exchange rate policies adopted during the 2008 crisis period were positive for the Brazilian economy as they avoided even more deleterious effects. They made it possible to mitigate the effects of this crisis, in particular, by favouring the maintenance of financial stability - objective of the exchange rate policy. However, it should be noted that the current moment still reverberates the events of the economic and financial crisis of 2008, with which the economic and sanitary crisis of 2020 exacerbated socioeconomic problems that had already erupted a decade earlier - including exchange rates with a quotation close to R$ 6.00 for $1.00 between 2020 and 2022.
