- Title
POWER: South Africa.
- Abstract
The article discusses Eskom, a state power utility in South Africa, wherein its problems are said to be sabotaging fixed investment spending plans that can further compromise the region's growth outlook. The Rand 21bn aluminum smelter at Coega has become an issue because Rio Tinto Alcan has declared that the construction will not push through unless there was visible evidence of Eskom building new power supply. Other mining groups such as Gold Fields and Anglo Platinum have also expressed cancellation or withholding of their expansion projects. The severe elecricity constraint is overshadowing all else including the stoppage in low-cost housing projects as indicated in the South African economy.
