- Abstract
The article is based on the observation that apart from the zone of homelessness there is a gray zone of housing deprivation, which has long since affected average wage earners. However, these zones cannot be divided sharply. In times of ubiquitous precariousness, symbolic demarcation ismore significant than social inequality. Drawing on an empirical case study, this article shows how affective, practical, and political boundaries are drawn ›against those down there‹ by precisely those who classify themselves as belonging to the ›middle class‹. It argues that the latter, bound by its fear of being split, stabilizes itself through projective fantasies of splitting. Biographical experiences of crisis and the fear of social decline catalyze racist and classist ressentiment against people who live ›even worse‹ or without roof over their heads. Using a method called depth-hermeneutics, this article proposes to interpret projective phantasies as status struggle in times of housing shortage. This struggle is not an emancipatory one, because it is based on resentment and division. It counteracts solidaritybased forms of dealing with the housing crisis.
