- Abstract
The article "I'm so excited - Practices of explicitly performative relationship formation in Fancalls" examines the practice of Fancalls, in which influencers talk on the phone with selected fans and publish the conversations on YouTube. It analyzes how these conversations enable a specific form of relationship formation in the digital public sphere. Various aspects of transmedia interconnection and the collaborative creation of digital public sphere are examined. Fancalls are characterized by multiple addressing, where YouTubers simultaneously speak with a fan on the phone and address the viewers on the screen. The conversation often begins with a guessing game, where the influencers do not reveal their identity. The fans express their emotions and gratitude for the call, while the YouTubers reciprocate their appreciation. The conversations mainly revolve around the relationship between the star and the fan, as well as the ongoing conversation itself. Fancalls serve as an exchange transaction in which both sides benefit and a form of public sphere is created, where publication and conversation merge.
