- Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study is to share the experiences of a large volume pathologist performed ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (US-FNA) clinic over a five-year period. Methods: A retrospective review of the pathology reports of all US-FNA clinic patients from May 2010 to May 2015 was completed. Patient demographics and pathological characteristics of each specimen were retrieved from the pathology electronic database. Results: During the 5-year period, 2135 US-FNA biopsies from 1549 patients were performed. The mean patient age was 53, range from 14 to 94 years old. There were 1165 female and 384 male patients. 2063 out of 2135 (96.6 %) FNA were completed under ultrasound guidance. The mean size of targeted nodule was 2.0 cm, range from 0.2 cm to 12 cm. The US-FNA sites and adequacy rates were listed in table 1. Overall, the diagnostic rates were as follows, benign (77.6 %), atypical (4.4 %), suspicious for malignancy (8.2 %), malignant (5.6 %), and non-diagnostic (4.2 %). Conclusion: Pathologist performed US-FNA is an alternative to obtain diagnostic information from superficial nodules of a wide range of anatomical locations, especially in the head and neck.
