The article offers a reply by the author to commentaries by Pete Dixon and Marisa Bortolussi and by Don Kuiken responding to his article "The scientific study of literary experience: Sampling the state of the art" which appeared in the journal in 2015. Topics include humanities-based and neuroscience-based approaches to studying readers' responses to literature, the role of imagination in understanding poetry, and the distinction between literary response and literary experience.
