- Abstract
Abstract: The multiple levels of redaction in the Deuteronomistic History which more recent exegesis has discovered were already outlined in the work of Martin Noth, as also of Alfred Jepsen. The only reason why they were not given more prominence by Noth is that his redaction-critical argument was directed against the Documentary Hypothesis. In addition Noth's hypothesis of the »System of the Twelve Tribes of Israel« led him to overlook the fundamental role which the monarchy plays in the history. This weakness was corrected by Timo Veijola. The importance of Noth's hypothesis for the study of the books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings was only strengthened by these corrections. Where the History began still remains uncertain.
