Mining the Archive.
- Abstract
The Wagner Journal Volume 15 Number 1 66 Mining the Archive Matthew Rye assesses the New York Met's autumn "Wagner Week" of streamed performances Of all the world's major (and minor) opera houses, the Metropolitan Opera in New York has been both the most inactive and the most active since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. English subtitles (and the Met, like Vienna, uses a rather swish video add-on that allows one to choose their font, colour and background transparency) were at times somewhat loose: two examples from the last scene of Act I - Brangäne's "Schnell, den Mantel, den Königsschmuck!" Elsewhere, companies early on began offering us generous glimpses into their operatic back catalogues, from classic TV opera broadcasts from the 1960s in Hamburg to a rotating selection of recent productions at the Berlin Staatsoper (including several of its current Wagner stagings).
