- Abstract
Limited excavations into Cahokia's Mound 49 were made by the University of Oklahoma's Early Cahokia Project in July 1994. Two units were excavated into the mound's north and south lower flank, providing new evidence into the construction of Mound 49. Based on these excavations, it appears that mound construction (1) was coterminous with the leveling of the Grand Plaza, (2) initially involved a series of low blanket mantles and water-redeposited sediments followed by a massive stage enlargement of alternating light and dark clays, and (3) involved later repeated remodeling of the substructural platform surmounted by nondomestic buildings. The remodeling of a packed-earth pyramid core indicates that early mounds were excavated and commemorated in later years by the indigenous builders. Perhaps this commemoration was related to the conversion of the entire feature into a ridge-top mortuary mound, although direct evidence of this was not found during excavations.
