- Abstract
The introduction of a new political and administrative organization in the New Spain is a powerful affirmation of the Spanish crown. In the pueblos, it established cabildos. The question of the place of the native traditional elite in the cabildos of pueblos is central. How did they protect their power? The diversity of situations is important, the country is vast; and every land has not yet been studied. Numerous recent monographs seem to show that the native elite maintained their political role by monopolizing responsibilities during the 16th century. But by the end of the century, new groups come into view in the pueblos and take municipal power. There remains, however, numerous points to be clarified as far as the running of the cabildo is concerned.
