- Title
Biography: Hagiography or demonology?
- Authors
Noble, Jonathan
- Abstract
The article discusses the importance of historical data as the basis of objectively writing biographies. Sans objectivity there are various erroneous accounts of the lives of known composers including allegations that Ludwig van Beethoven or Franz Schubert died of syphilis, that Peter Tchaikovsky committed suicide, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was murdered. The role of physicians in providing biographical information about composers who became their patients is mentioned.
