- Abstract
The article discusses a research study on identifying prey from scats of carnivores through mammalian hair fiber analysis using the optical fiber diameter analyzer (OFDA). Conducted were analyses of 9 mammal species hair fibers including domestic goat, Siberian ibex and marmot including one thousand hair fibers from each collection compared with hair fibers of 21 scats of fox, 42 scats of snow leopard and 10 scats of gray wolf. It used OFDA to accurately measure average fiber diameter (AFD), diameter distribution (SD) and medulation (MD). Conclusions indicated that presence of hair in the fecal matter of carnivore predators can be used to investigate the mammalian preys in their diet although problems on such method include variation in hair types and overlapping of characteristics.
