- Abstract
The article discusses the conditions surrounding the death of Jewish pioneer and entrepreneur Joseph Brown during a trip made as a courier for the Schwabacher Brothers firm in Walla Walla, Washington in 1862. The author describes the winter conditions responsible for Brown's death and discusses the possibility that he was carrying gold to an assay office operated by the firm Block (Bloch), Miller & Co. in The Dalles, Oregon. Brown's attempts to survive are described, and his burial and grave's headstone are discussed.
