- Abstract
The article focuses on Harry Gesas, a Jewish merchant in Kemmerer, a western Wyoming coal-mining town. He was born in 1846 in Lithuania and came to Wyoming via Russia and New York City in 1898 with his wife and children. A partnership with Jacob Loucks created the Gesas & Loucks clothing and dry goods company in Kemmerer which opened a branch in the town of Diamondville in November 1898. Harry maintained a business with his brother Barney who settled in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Gesas and Louck's branch in Diamondville closed down after eight months of operation but their business in Kemmerer continued to operate. Harry and his family moved to Idaho where he set up a saloon and a liquor business. He died on November 29, 1923 in San Francisco, California.
