- Title
P2P--A Revolution Waits.
- Authors
Casteliuccio, Michael
- Abstract
The article reports that Napster is experiencing competition from other peer-to-peer (P2P) conduits like Gnutella and Freenet. The article explains that Napster's centralized control over file systems has been problematic, and these competitors allow file swapping, allowing the user to store, distribute, and search for files. The article discusses the benefits of the P2P platform, which allows for sharing of files, but not in a centralized, controlled location. The article defines the benefits of P2P to the science community and notes that its benefits to the business community are beginning to be realized. The issue of security in such an atmosphere, though, requires exploration.
