Incremental shuttle walk test in cardiac rehabilitation.

- Abstract
The incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) is a low cost, submaximal exercise test, which is commonly used in the assessment of aerobic fitness in a cardiac rehabilitation (CR) setting. This review discusses the practical applications of the ISWT in the context of its validity, repeatability and its predictability in measuring aerobic fitness. The validity of the ISWT test has been shown to have a strong correlation between distances walked to actual measures taken during the 'gold standard' treadmill test. However, the overall distance achieved during the ISWT can be influenced by the test/retest familiarity effect, if a practice walk test is not performed. Despite this limitation, the heart rate walking speed index can be applied to measure the true physiological effects of the ISWT in the absence of a practice walk following an exercise intervention. In addition, the results of the ISWT can also provide valuable information for exercise prescription and physical activity guidance along with providing prognostic information for patients requiring heart transplantation.
