“Who Would Want to Grow Old Only to Grow Poor?”.
- Authors
SCHIRMER, ELENI
- Abstract
This article explores the financial challenges that seniors are currently facing, including increasing debt and financial crises. It draws attention to the historical Townsend Plan, a movement that fought for seniors' rights during the Great Depression, and suggests that it could offer a potential solution to the current crisis. The article also examines the limitations and inequalities of the Social Security Act, which was intended to provide a safety net for aging Americans but has left many seniors in debt. It concludes by questioning whether a new movement similar to the Townsend Plan is necessary to address the current challenges faced by seniors.
