- Abstract
Research on international norm dynamics faces the challenge of analytically capturing the interpretations of many different actors in order to be able to account for the complexity, plurality, and changing perspectives in global politics. Recent methods of quantitative, computer-assisted text analysis make it possible to analyze the content of large text corpora and thus many cases in parallel. Our paper introduces an innovative approach that makes a method of quantitative text analysis applicable to research on norms. Unsupervised Topic Modeling is an inductive-exploratory method for finding patterns in discourse. We find it particularly useful for research on the translation of norms, which focuses on the openness, fluidity, and changing meaning of norms. Using global climate politics as an example, this paper illustrates how norms institutionalized in the international regime are translated by member states. We discuss the potential of our approach and also reflect on the challenges involved.
