- Abstract
Our aim is to determine whether emotional reactions to a case vignette depicting a person with depression differ depending on whether respondents call the condition 'burnout' or 'depression'. Our analyses are based on a representative population survey in Germany in 2011. Calling the problem 'depression' was associated with stronger fear and embarrassment, but also with less incomprehension. Calling the problem 'burnout' was associated with feeling more need to help the person, less uncertainty, less annoyment and less incomprehension. If respondents were employed, calling the problem 'depression' was associated with more insecurity, while calling the problem 'burnout' was associated with greater compassion. Overall, our study shows that emotional reactions are more positive when the problem is called burnout and are more negative when it is called depression. We discuss potential reasons for these differences.
