- Abstract
The existence of educational space in modern times is largely determined by existing traditions, which must be regarded for the purpose of its improvement. An important part of the history of education in all its manifestations is the everyday life of school employees, among which it is possible to distinguish the aspects related to behavior of representatives of teachers’ corporation, which was not always ethical. The purpose of the publication is to analyze issues of such behavior in gymnasiums, pro-gymnasiums and schools of the Kyiv Educational District in the 19th - early 20th centuries, as well as to find out exactly which actions represented unethical behavior, how environment reacted to it, and which consequences it had. Based on analysis of documents and systematization of obtained information, we come to a conclusion that a significant part of the teachers’ daily life in the 19th - at the beginning of the 20th century in the Kyiv Educational District was unethical behavior. The author determines that such behavior was most clearly demonstrated in mutual insulting and bullying of teachers by their management or other teachers, which occurred systematically. Teachers did the same to students, in particular, they used physical and psychological violence. As unethical actions can also be considered unfair or elevated treatment of children by employees of educational institutions, improper performance of duties by them, bribery, etc. The article made clear that information about such actions became known due to written complaints (often anonymous), reports, requests, etc., submitted by affected persons to management of institutions or the District. At the same time, they could have been biased. Consequences of such phenomena were usually solved at the level of a guardian or directorate of schools in the province in the form of reprimands, transfer from one institution to another, dismissal of teachers. The author explains that students and their parents not often succeeded in getting the teacher who, in their opinion, was guilty, punished.
